Seminar 24/05 – Global illumination and spherical harmonic in real time – Pierre Mézières

For the next STORM seminar, Pierre Mézières will give a presentation about Global illumination and spherical harmonic in real time.

Abstract
In real-time rendering of global illumination, a calculation model proposes to distribute virtual point light (VPL) in the scene. They play the role of caches to capture incident lighting and redistribute it through the scene. Most of the time, there are considered isotropic. Therefore, anisotropic materials cannot be used correctly. To overcome this limitation, the idea is to use pre-computation techniques (Precomputed Radiance Transfer – PRT) to model anisotropic VPL. These techniques use spherical harmonics, their properties allow to greatly accelerate computation of lighting in real-time. In this presentation, the focus will be on PRT techniques.

This seminar will take place the 24/05 at 12:30pm in the Salle des Thèses at IRIT.
