INTELLIGENT LIGHTING IN TOULOUSE AND MADRID

IMG_3511

Tr@nsnet’s first activity focuses on the replication of intelligent lighting devices. The partners involved in this activity are the Polytecnic University of Madrid (UPM), through the CeDInt lab, as well as the Toulouse III University – Paul Sabatier (UT3) as campus owners. The technology providers are Tecnica 6000 (Spain) and Kawantech (France).

Objectives
. To replicate the smart outdoor lighting systems of each university as demonstrators in the other universities.
. To capitalize of the experience and the lessons learned on the demonstrator cross-transfer between France and Spain: identify technical and non-technical barriers, and propose solutions to overcome them.
. To collaborate with technology providers (companies) that will give appreciation of the service and advice offered by the labs on their system.
. To study how end-users perceive the systems and what are the benefits in order to explain the acceptability of each technology by different cultures and type of user (education, technical background, environment awareness, etc.).

The smart lighting system previously installed at Madrid campus is an Internet of Things (IoT) solution developed by Tecnica 6000. Each street lamp is equipped with an IoT controller device called BatStreetLighting, which dims LED luminaire level considering mainly three variables: luminosity (measured by an equipped sensor), presence detection (measured by connected sensors) and neighbour messages (sent by near street lamps).  The communication in based on 6loWPAN protocol (IPv6) and network coordination is managed by another IoT device called BatLink, which acts as an interface to the local/Internet network.

The Kawantech Kara system has been installed in Toulouse in the frame of LightCampus FEDER project. Kara sensors work in a network. Installed on each luminaire in an area, they analyse the objects that move in the street and communicate with each other to optimize public lighting. Kara’s cameras can discern a car, a pedestrian or simply a movement of a tree branch. For pedestrians and very slow vehicles, Kara dynamically intensifies the lighting to follow their motion. Kawantech cameras process images locally and send notification messages.

Along this activity, UPM has replicated Kawantech solution from UT3 campus, deploying Kara systems and integrating it with existing BatStreetlighting solution. Meanwhile, UT3 has replicated T6000 solution from UPM campus, deploying BatStreelighting and BatLink devices.

Evolution of 1.1
This activity started in January 2021 with the first meeting (UPM, UT3, T6000, Kawantech) in which the replication specifics were defined. The next phase was focused in the systems acquisition by universities. After different difficulties regarding administrative procedures, Kawantech sent the Kara system to UPM and T6000 delivered the BSL and BatLink devices to UT3. At the same time, both UPM and UT3 acquired, installed and tested new versions of existing systems in campus, so they would comply with the replications.

In 2022, UPM received the Kawantech system and, with the help of guidelines, tested the solution in both laboratory and campus. Finally, it has integrated the Kara sensor with the existing smart lighting solution. UT3 has installed 5 fixtures with Kawantech System and activated on the campus. Since then, they were plagued by various issues (technical and legal), which are being solved.

Results
The deliverable will be a report on the replication process: steps, technical difficulties, administrative barriers, solutions, etc.
UT3 has done an online survey on the perception of campus lighting from students (security, environmental impact…). Analysis of results (180 answers) will constitute a first basis of end-user reactions following ENoLL process. After completion, the survey will be replicated in UPM campus.
This activity is collaborating with A2.3 (Biodiversity analysis), as smart lighting enables the mitigation of the study on how the excess of artificial illumination affects wildlife.
