Ontology Specification Draft

Abstract

DMO has been developped in the context of Semantics4FAIR project (https://www.irit.fr/semantics4fair/) that aims at improving the FAIRness degree of domain datasets. The project takes as a use case meteorological datasets. The ontology is built upon three main sandard ontologies: GeoDCAT-AP (i.e., dcat), RDF data cube and CSVW. Combining these three ontologies, allows us to represent: (i) general metadata (metadata about a dataset as a whole) with GeoDCAT-AP, and (ii) structural metadata at the dataset level with RDF data cube and at the dataset distribution level with CSVW when distributions are in tabular format.

Introduction back to ToC

This is a place holder text for the introduction. The introduction should briefly describe the ontology, its motivation, state of the art and goals.

Dataset Metadata Ontology (DMO): Overview back to ToC

This ontology has the following classes and properties.

Dataset Metadata Ontology (DMO): Description back to ToC

This is a placeholder text for the description of your ontology. The description should include an explanation and a diagram explaining how the classes are related, examples of usage, etc.

Cross reference for Dataset Metadata Ontology (DMO) classes, properties and dataproperties back to ToC

This section provides details for each class and property defined by Dataset Metadata Ontology (DMO).

Classes

Columnc back to ToC or Class ToC

IRI: https://w3id.org/dmo#Column

This class has exactly the same definition as its superclass. We have created it to apply new constraints that are specific to our ontology.
has super-classes
column c

Csv distributionc back to ToC or Class ToC

IRI: https://w3id.org/dmo#CsvDistribution

This class represents a dataset distribution in tabular format (e.g., csv format)
has super-classes
distribution, table c
is disjoint with
Dataset slice c

Dataset slicec back to ToC or Class ToC

IRI: https://w3id.org/dmo#DatasetSlice

This class is used to represent a subset of a large dataset according to the definiiton of the calss Slice (in RDF data cube vocabulary). It is a subclass of dcat:Dataset, hence we can used all the metadata elements provided by dcat to describe a given subset (DatasetSlice)
has super-classes
dataset, slice
is disjoint with
Csv distribution c

Object Properties

Correponds toop back to ToC or Object Property ToC

IRI: https://w3id.org/dmo#correspondsTo

This property explicits the relation between a distribution schema component ( a Column) and a dataset schema component (measure or dimension).

Requiresop back to ToC or Object Property ToC

IRI: https://w3id.org/dmo#requires

This property represents the dependency between a given DatasetSlice and any other dataset (dcat:Dataset).

has characteristics: transitive
