The NEPTUNE (Nice Environment with a Process and Tools Using Norms and Example) project is project financially supported by the European Community.

The main results of this project were :

  • a tool  : the NEPTUNE platform (ajouter lien),
  • a book (.pdf (ajouter lien), .zip (ajouter lien)) available on this site,
  • an annual workshop that take place in Paris each year since 2002 (for the French speaker).

Currently, the NEPTUNE know-how is used on an industrial platform, TOPCASED, and on an academic platform the NEPTUNE II platform (ajouter lien).

The project

The European Community has played a very active role in giving concrete expression to the new developments taking place in graphic modelling languages like for example UML (Unified Modelling Language) and SysML. These developments are carried out mainly by the OMG (Object Management Group).

The main objectives of the NEPTUNE project (Nice Environment with a Process and Tools Using Norms and Example) is to develop both a method, a methodology and tools (complementary to the existing software workshops) based on the use of the UML notation.

This method, gained from considerable experience in the industrial environment, will apply to a variety of different fields: software development, business processes and knowledge management.

The newly developed tools will enable UML models to be statically checked for their coherence and consistency. They will also enable professional documentation resulting from the transformation of models to be generated. This will be compliant with the context of the UML notation and will take account of user's requirements.

The method and tools developed in this way will facilitate the application of the UML standard as well as promoting its use in a large number of varied fields.

Finally this work will enable solutions to be found so that the UML standard might be further improved with a view to participating effectively in the work of the OMG. These improvements are presented during the NEPTUNE workshops that take place each year in May or June.
