Datanoos : a platform at the service of open science within UFTMIP

Head:  Nathalie AUSSENAC-GILLES

Many questions about data arise for research personnel, whether they are researchers, teacher-researchers, engineers, post-doctoral students, doctoral students, in all disciplines. To meet this need, the DataNooS1 academic alliance aims to share and cross-reference research data, to converge data/computation/content resources and to promote knowledge practices that combine multidisciplinary approaches. It brings together 120 members from 30 entities (laboratories, units, federations) of the UFTMiP.

The alliance favors the interdisciplinary co-construction of a data NooSphere, a shared cooperative framework for understanding problems, sharing expertise and know-how, and enriching a digital agora of solutions and practices, turned towards innovation. The alliance brings together its members in a participatory and transdisciplinary approach to the use of data and knowledge: a Workshop / Use Case / Plenary cycle allows them to pool problems, share data, co-design know-how and develop solutions within the dataCore center of expertise, respond to specific training needs and develop projects in partnership.

DataNoos proposes to set up an experimental and partnership platform (a meta-infrastructure) that meets the objectives shared by its members:

  • Supporting the opening and sharing of data, particularly from research
  • Guarantee FAIR data
  • Facilitate the cross-referencing of multiple data sources
  • Prepare data for analysis and AI

DataNoos carries out three types of action for which the platform is the support:

  • Collect/return information from surveys, state of the art, adoption of recommendations, contributions, evolution of practices
  • Impulse Proofs of Concept/Demonstrators
  • Capitalize and integrate research results and experiences from Use Cases

Positioning of the platform in relation to existing platforms (local and national)

Existing platforms (local):

  • CALLISTO within CALMIP is intended to be used only by HPC
  • projects current developments are being hosted in OSIRIM (prototyping, development/testing environment, data storage, metadata semantization, data lake management, …)
  • existing local repositories (TGIR PROGEDO, DataTERRA, GIS GENOTOUL) or to be created will be progressively federated or integrated

Existing platforms (beyond):

  • Reflections in progress at the national (CNRS, PNSO), European (EOSC) and international (RDA) levels on the federation of platforms and services

Technical and organizational description, utilization rate

Technical description: The platform is a VRE (Virtual Research Environment), i.e. a distributed infrastructure whose core will be hosted on OSIRIM. We have chosen CALLISTO (developed by T. Louge from CALMIP), which is based on a Dataverse, which is enriched for a better management of metadata and the respect of FAIR principles, to which we add an access to a workflow engine and the management of a data lake.

Organization: DataNoos works with a steering committee, chaired by Nathalie Aussenac-Gilles, which coordinates all the actions led by the dataNooS alliance. It is composed of 10 members coming from the involved disciplinary poles and the leaders of the think tanks (use cases and dataCore).

Rate of use: The platform is currently used by the partners of the AVION useCase1 and the European SMS project (led by M. Braza from IMFT), by the partners of the ANR Semantics4FAIR project (led by IRIT), in particular by the MeteoFrance research center. The platform is open to other projects with similar data storage and processing needs, such as the NeoCampus project and the SYNERGIE project (CNRS single call project).
