Dept. Artificial Intelligence

Head: Pascale ZARATÉ

The Artificial Intelligence Department investigates the automation of reasoning and decision-making processes, based on knowledge drawn from texts and data, but also at defining natural language analysis systems, with a view to helping humans. This research addresses the following issues:

  • Automated reasoning, especially under uncertainty and probabilistic reasoning;
  • Symbolic and statistical machine learning;
  • Decision support systems for an individual or a group of decision makers and automated decision processes;
  • The formalization of interaction and communication between agents, in particular the role of beliefs and the management of arguments;
  • The security of information and communication systems;
  • Models and methods for natural language processing, natural language semantics and discourse analysis;
  • Knowledge engineering and formal ontology, from knowledge extraction, its modeling and its formal representation, its linking within the semantic web and the web of data, and the study of its evolution.

The interactions between the 3 teams of the department, ADRIA, LILaC and MELODI, are important, with several co-supervised PhD theses and a regular department seminar. Moreover, the activities of the department are increasingly open, even more than in the past, to interdisciplinary collaborations with researchers in linguistics, cognitive psychology, philosophy and economy. The common interest with the Institut des Mathématiques de Toulouse (IMT) in machine learning, has recently led to the creation of a joint team “learning, optimisation, complexity” (“Apprentissage, Optimisation, Complexité”, AOC). The teams of the department also carry out research at the crossroads with other IRIT departments and collaborate in transverse projects, in particular in the action scientific « Computing, Big Data, AI » and the application areas: « Health, autonomy, living, well-being », « Social medias, digital social ecosystems », « Heritage and people safety », « Aerospace and transportation ».

Moreover, several researchers from the department are involved in the ANITI Institute labeled in 2019. We count among our researchers the scientific dean of ANITI, Nicholas Asher (DR-CNRS, IRIT) and the following chairholders:

  • Empowering Data-driven AI by Argumentation and Persuasion. Hybrid Argument: Leila Amgoud (DR CNRS, IRIT) involving the following researchers of the AI department: P. Muller and E. Lorini
  • Knowledge compilation techniques for reducing complexity of algorithms for solving problems with uncertainty and preferences. Knowledge Compilation PI: Hélène Fargier (DR CNRS, IRIT) involving the following researchers of the AI department: J. Mengin and R. Guillaume
  • Deep Learner Explanation and Verification: J. Marques-Silva (DR CNRS, IRIT) involving the following researcher of the AI department: M. Cooper

In addition, the AI department is fully implied within ANITI thanks to collaborations of the following researchers with other laboratories or foreign universities:

  • C. Braud associated with the chair held by R. Van Rullen (CERCO): Deep Learning with semantic, cognitive and biological constraints
  • M. Serrurier et E. Pauwels associated with the chair held by J.M. Loubès (IMT) : Fair and Robust Methods in Machine Learning
