CoRes (& AlgoTel) 2019

Gian Pietro Picco is a professor in the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science (DISI) at the University of Trento, Italy. His research spans the fields of software engineering, middleware, and networking, and is currently oriented towards wireless sensor networks, Internet of Things and Cyber-Physical systems, mobile computing, and large-scale distributed systems. The research performed in his group combines theoretical study and in-field validation in real-world applications, and has led to several awards, including a "Most Influential Paper" at ICSE'07 (for a paper published a decade earlier) and Best Paper Awards at IPSN (2009, 2011, 2015), PerCom (2012), and EWSN (2018). He is an associate editor for ACM Trans. on Sensor Networks (TOSN), and has served in the same role for IEEE Trans. on Software Engineering (TSE) and the J. of Pervasive and Mobile Computing. He is also the co-Editor-in-Chief of the newly-created ACM Trans. on the Internet of Things (TIOT).

Concurrent Transmissions: A New Paradigm for Ultra-wideband Ranging and Localization

Conventional ranging and localization protocols schedule the packet transmissions used to estimate distance to be separate in time. In contrast, this talk shows that, in ultra-wideband (UWB) radios, it is possible to perform these transmissions simultaneously and yet recover the relevant information. Indeed, the concurrent UWB signals are "fused" in the communication channel, whose channel impulse response (CIR) is available on popular UWB transceivers, e.g., the DecaWave DW1000. Combined with the fact that UWB transmissions rely on very short (<2ns) pulses, the CIR enables a receiving device to retrieve the precise timing of the individual signals, and estimate accurately the distance of the corresponding sources.

We apply this concept to two novel and potentially disruptive techniques. First, we define a novel concurrent ranging scheme that is faster and less energy-hungry than traditional approaches. Next, we illustrate Chorus, a localization scheme in which the target device computes the time difference of arrival (TDOA) of signals sent concurrently by localization anchors in known positions. This scheme is the opposite of existing TDOA schemes for UWB, where the target transmits the signal and anchors compute the time difference. This reversed perspective enables several advantages, including support for countless targets, similar to GPS.

Lin Chen is an associate professor in the Laboratoire de Recherche en Informatique (LRI) and the Department of Computer Science at University of Paris-Sud. He is also affiliated with the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF) as Junior member since 2018. He received his B. Sc. in Radio Engineering in 2002 from Southeast University, China, M. Sc. in Networking in 2005 from University of Paris 6, engineer and Ph. D. in 2005 and 2008 from Telecom ParisTech (ENST), Paris, and the Habilitation (HDR) in 2017 from University of Paris-Sud. He received the Bronze Medal of the CNRS in 2018. His research is mainly focused on the design and analysis of distributed algorithms and protocols in emerging networked systems, with a particular emphasis on energy efficiency, security and resilience.

Algorithm Design and Analysis in Wireless Networks

Algorithms are one of the most fundamental elements in computer science. Networks and networked systems are no exception. In this talk, I will investigate some algorithmic problems of both fundamental and practical importance in modern networks and networked systems, more specifically, wireless networks. Methodologically, I will present a research line that is systematically articulated as follows: (1) Establishment of theoretical performance bound, (2) Optimum or approximation algorithm design, (3) Further extension and generalization. By following this line of research, we hope to make a tiny while systematic step forwards in the design and analysis of algorithms that can scale elegantly, act efficiently in terms of computation and communication, while keeping operations as local and distributed as possible.
