It’s a reality, life is getting longer !

The needs related to health and quality of life evolve according to this reality, which brings to light new scientific and technological approaches concerning the prevention, the diagnosis and the therapy of diseases, as well as the assistance given to people with specific needs, whose sensory, motor or cognitive abilities may be affected.

Many fields of research including Computer Science but also Life Sciences and Humanities, ,as well as and Social Sciences are convened. Cooperation between these areas of research must be fostered in order to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of new technologies related to health and autonomy, while respecting individuals and their wishes. Computing, as a science but also as a technology, naturally has its place in this new landscape of health and quality of life. The design of relevant IT systems because they address identified, but also effective and efficient needs is based on a set of essential skills.

First, it is necessary to develop tools for acquisition, management and exploitation of information, whether for personal or collective, professional or public, etc. This paves the way for new information, assessment and simulation systems for the benefit of patients, people with special needs, and health professionals.

The acquisition of information can be achieved in different ways : from human individuals, through imagery of the living ; from virtual individuals, by modeling and simulation of living things ; but also from the global knowledge of health professionals, using knowledge engineering. The information thus acquired is extremely complex, from several points of view : the volume of data to be manipulated can be considerable ; the relationships between the different pieces of information generate information themselves ; information is often extremely sensitive and requires secure access ; access to information must be effective, from anywhere and at any time.

Then, the exploitation of this information can be approached according to several directions : for the fundamental knowledge in biology and in health, for the prevention and the improvement of the quality of life ; and to assist the many professionals working in the field of health and autonomy.

Finally, computing opens the way to a new set of possibilities concerning assistive technologies for assisting individuals suffering from a sensory, motor or cognitive impairment, but also in order to develop communicating and intelligent environments (the apartment, city, ...) that improve the quality of life of these people. These technologies are based on significant progress made in the field of sensors and data analysis, but also in the field of interaction (tangible, multimodal, multi-support, etc.)

IRIT has given priority to research in the field of health, autonomy and quality of life and reveals five strong skills in life sciences, biomedical data management, modeling and simulation of life, e- Health, and assistive technologies related to disability.
