The IRIT (Institut de Recherche en Informatique de Toulouse – Toulouse Institute of Computer Science Research) represents one of the major potential of the French research in computer science, with a workforce of more than 600 members including 250 researchers and teachers 244 PhD students, 14 post-doc and researchers under contract and also 43 engineers and administrative employees.
The 21 research groups of the laboratory are dispatched in seven scientific themes covering all the computer science domains of today :

We built four platforms and one user lab :
- PREVI, Virtual Reality and Interaction Platform : our laboratory tooled up of a hardware platform in order to develop work around the virtual reality and the interaction and more generally the sciences and techniques of information and communication
- OSIRIM, Information Retrieval and Knowledge Elicitation Platform (previously RFIEC), aims at mutualise the resources and develop the research work of the groups in the fields of indexing, information retrieval and storage in texts, to create a national pole of competence in Information Retrieval.
- PRETI, Research and Experiment in Information Processing Platform aims at putting together different functionalities showing the advanced researches of IRIT groups working in the domains of Artificial Intelligence and Information Systems.
- GRID 5000 Project aims at building an experimental research platform in computer science on a large scale calculus grid.
- Handicap and Mobility, user lab aims at designing and study the usability of substitution and support systems for handicapped persons.
From 2008, we defined four strategic fields around the big scientific and socio-economical challenges :
- Computer Science for Health, treated in the laboratory by four competence domains : living and medical scanning, biomedical data management and access and processing infrastructures, modelling and simulation of living, handicap and autonomy.
- Data Mass and Calculus, concerning different facets of processing and calculus of massive data, covering both infrastructures and algorithms.
- Ambient Socio-technical Systems, the components of which could be physical entities or distributed software having capacities of interaction, autonomous behaviour and of adaptability to the human current task and to the available physical and numerical resources.
- Critical Embedded Systems, designed as components gathering communicating through one or more numerical nets, we want to guaranty some properties of quality of service ; for that, we study certified development environments and we develop execution platforms.
The strategic fields aim at federating the efforts of research groups in the themes to bring coordinated answers to these challenges.
