In this seminar I discuss some aspects of Ontology Population from Text that emerged in the context of the recent task on “Timeline: Cross-Document Event Ordering” organized at Semeval 2015. I will focus on event interpretation, showing evidences that written texts do not provide crucial information for their interpretation (e.g. spatial and temporal information). This fact suggests the need of a broader interpretation framework, where textual material is complemented with several kinds of background knowledge. The research direction mentioned above has been addressed in the KNOWLEDGESTORE framework (, a large-scale infrastructure for the combined storage and interlinking of both multimedia resources and ontological knowledge. I will discuss the KNOWLEDGESTORE functionalities and its use in the context of the EU NewsReader project (
