Scientific domain

Our research area is Information Systems for which we focus on data and users. Our research topics are related to improve user access to raw and advanced data.

Our research topics correspond mainly to the following scientific domains (ACM/CCS):

  • des Data Management Systems: database modeling and design – decision-making systems, data warehouse and multidimensional databases – complex document management - geo-referenced data, spatio-temporal data - metadata.
  • des Information Retrieval Systems: contextual processes for information retrieval – recommender systems – social networks – document mining and machine learning.

The SIG Team is composed of 19 permanent positions (regular researchers), and of about thirty non permanents as post-doc, PhD students, trainees or research engineers. Research works are supported by the computing infrastructures of the lab, in particular OSIRIM platform (storage capacity, clusters, datasets, analysis tools and processes, search engines, evaluation tools).

Research works

Our research work is directed toward the whole data processing chain. We propose methods, models and tools for simple, effective, and efficient access to qualified and relevant information. The final goal is to enhance the use of the information, to ease information analysis and support the decision-making process.

Figure 1: Data processing chain.

We deal with masses of information, in particular with big data, numerical data, textual data, multimedia data and metadata. Data may be structured data, semi-structured data as well as unstructured data ("flat" data). Our research is organized around two complementary research axes:

  • The first one consists in gathering raw qualified data and to Integrate, Model and Enrich the data in order to build elaborated data.
  • The second axis consists in the proposal of mechanisms supporting possibilities to Explore, Analyze and Visualize data in order to ease and adapt access to both neophyte or specialist users.
