Dept. Interaction, Collective Intelligence

Head :  Emmanuel DUBOIS

The Interaction and Collective Intelligence Department develops interdisciplinary research activities focused on the design and evaluation of interactions between multiple actors in complex environments: the actors considered are of different natures and include humans, sensors, devices and other hardware resources, software or a combination of these (human-human, human-machine, agent-agents); complex environments are environments mixing physical and digital resources, potentially open and dynamic.

These two aspects give the department’s work strong originality, which we apply in three contexts: 1) multi-agent systems for simulation, complex problem solving and optimization, 2) interactive user-task-oriented systems, and 3) systems for computer-assisted human learning. The department’s work, therefore, falls into three major research areas: multi-agent systems (MAS), human-computer interaction (HCI), and Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL).

The department comprises 30 permanent researchers or teacher-researchers, 20 PhD students, post-docs and contract engineers. The department comprises three research teams: ELIPSE, SMAC and TALENT.

Department keywords: Human-computer interaction, interaction techniques, assistive technology, mixed reality; Multi-agent systems, agent-based modelling and simulation, agent-oriented software engineering for complex systems; Computational environment for human learning, learning analytics; User experimentation, User-centered approach; Complex computing environments, Collective intelligence.

ELIPSE: the ELIPSE research group is leading works in Human-Computer Interaction. Its multi-disciplinary approach (cognitive sciences, HCI, computer science) makes it possible to develop Advanced Interaction Techniques as research objects for developing models, new interaction techniques or devices, and as research tools for exploring their impact on human perception and cognition. The work is carried out from the complementary angles of the Human (perception, cognition, behaviour) and its Interactions (processes, models, technologies), points of view combined within theoretical contributions, concrete implementations and experiments.

Keywords: ubiquitous interaction, interactive information spaces, user-centred design methods, innovative interaction techniques, interactive visualization, assistive technologies, predictive user performance models, human-machine collaboration, cognitive technologies, human augmentation.

SMAC: The Cooperative Multi-Agent Systems team tackles most of the essential themes associated with multi-agent systems: distributed artificial intelligence, distributed problem solving, learning, social simulations, local search optimization, engineering, validation, explainability. The team’s work focuses on the design and simulation of complex systems, self-adaptive systems with emergent functionality, and the design and evaluation of multi-agent systems based on interactive machine learning.

Keywords: multi-agent systems, software engineering for Multi-Agent Systems, agent-based modeling and simulation, machine learning, self-adaptation, distributed problem solving, optimization, control, coordination, self-organization, verification and validation, human in the loop, interactive machine learning.

TALENT: The Teaching And Learning ENhanced by Technologies team is part of the Computer Environments for Human Learning (EIAH – Technology Enhanced Learning) field, which studies how technologies can support human learning. Through its interdisciplinary collaborations, the team’s work focuses in particular on three areas of research: systems engineering to support active learning; learning analytics to support personalized, self-regulated learning in hybrid training situations; and the development and evaluation of competency-based approaches to help teachers and learners adapt to future educational challenges.

Keywords: learning data analysis, active learning, competency-based approaches, formative assessment, self-regulated learning, learning personalization, virtual and augmented reality, remote practical work
