Main research themes

Keywords: Natural language processing, discourse syntax and semantics, language and reasoning.

My research merges foundational aspects with empirical studies and prototype development.
A few generic ideas guide my team's work:

(1) elaborating a formalism and tools for discourse analysis based on logic that include reasoning capabilities, lexical semantics, typography and some formal syntax aspects.

(2) Text Clinic: improving the quality and contents of texts: application to grammatical error correction and style enhancement, and to procedure content improvements via risks analysis and prevention, elaboration of negociation scenarios, requirement analysis.

(3) Cooperative access to information: cooperative question-answering, argumentation analysis, opinion analysis.

(4) Extending the discourse analysis paradigm to other forms of communication: Western tonal music processing.

Projects and Prospective

Over the next few years, I plan to mainly develop the following points:

(1) Discourse analysis applied to procedural texts using the TextCoop platform, in particular: procedural question-answering, argument recognition, procedure fusion and enrichment (from other documents and from users' know-how), risk analysis and prevention in procedures (LELIE), processing multimedia procedural documents.

(2) Development of TextCoop, a Discourse analysis platform : based on logic programming and the language DISLOG (Discourse in Logic): recognition of rhetorical structures in various types of texts, developement of formal tools to handle these representations paired with reasoning capabilities; requirement analysis.

(3) Advanced question-answering responding intelligently and cooperatively to complex questions, How-to and opinion question-answering, including argumentation aspects, knowledge and lexical resources for answering questions.

(4) Active didactics: development of strategies to correct utterances in a language written by non-native speakers of that language (application to French authors writing in English and to other language pairs) using argumentation and decision theory (collaboration with Toulouse II).

(5) In preparation: Music and Language: investigating generative principles from language to account for structural principles of the Western musical language.

Current or recent Projects

LELIE ANR project, risk analysis and prevention via the analysis of procedures. see: LELIE .

TextCoop: discourse semantics analysis, application to procedural question-answering, and to a number of applications around procedure enrichment, detection of inconsistencies, etc.

ExplainCoop: semantics and pragmatics of explanation in profesionnal and didactic environements, elaboration of explanation schemes w.r.t. communicative goals.

Prepnet: syntax and semantics of prepositions in a multilingual perspective

CorrectTools: authoring tools for authors writing texts in a foreign language, the French to English pair, collaboration with LLA, Toulouse II

Language and Music in collaboration .

Activities and Student Supervision

I have been involved over the past 20 years in a number of projects:
EEC: (Graal, Genelex, Eagles), bilateral international (with Portugal, Belgium, Spain, USA, Canada, India, etc.) and national projects.

I am managing at the moment or I recently managed: an ANR project, LELIE (Emergence programme), a STIC-Asia project on multilingual language processing (Thailand, India, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines), an ANR-RNTL project: TextCoop (with LIPN and Sinéqua), a CNRS PICs with Thailand, and IFCPAR project with India (Jadavpur Univ. Kolkata). I also manage a regular collaboration with EADS-IW on procedural text enrichment.

My main institutional contacts have been or are: Brandeis university, univ. of Maryland, IRO Montréal, ILTEC Portugal, IRST-Trento and university, Kasetsart University (Bangkok), de la Salle University (Manila), Jadavpur University (Kolkata, India), Madan Puraksar Pustakalaya (Nepal), Univ. Of Dundee, Univ. of Potsdam, and LORIA, etc.

I gave about 50 invited talks, among which at labs like MIT, Univ. Of Maryland, ICOT (Japan), NAIST, KUL, Xerox, and many places in Canada and in India.

I have been involved in a number of summer schools, I organized about 14 international workshops (on logic programming for NLP, verb semantics, prepositions, and question-answering (KRAQ series)), and the ACL'01 in Toulouse. I have been involved as a reviewer of or as a programme committee member in a number of journals and major conferences in language processing.

I supervised about 20 PhD students, some under co-supervision, and a number of MA student and engineers.

Current students and collaborators:

Marie GARNIER, PhD, project on French to English errors detection and correction.

Bal Krishna BAL, PhD, university of Katmandu, Nepal, opinion question answering, opinion synthesis

Thomas De FILLIPO, PhD, LELIE project, requirement analysis, Cifre funding with Prometil.

Sarah BOURSE, PhD, Explanation theory and linguistic aspects, LELIE project + franco-Indian project

Camille ALBERT, LELIE project.

Collaborations:

Mukda SUKTARACHAN, Asanee KAWTRAKUL, Kasetsart university, Bangkok, procedural question answering, ontologies and reasoning for answering questions.

Silvia QUARTERONI, Politecnico Milano.
