On the Role of Natural Language Processing in a Data-Driven Approach to the Ontology Life-Cycle
Paul Buitelaar
Ontologies are formal definitions of conceptualizations of a specific domain of interest. Their use is in the interpretation, integration and sharing of data in the domain(s) they describe. As these domains develop, the ontologies will need to be adapted accordingly. We can thus define a life-cycle for ontologies that includes their development, use and modification, each of which will be driven by the data that the ontology is expected to cover. As much of this data will be text-based, the talk will consider the role of natural language processing in a data-driven approach to automating the ontology life-cycle.
