He received the Engineer and the Doctor-Engineer degrees from the Ecole Nationale Suprieure de l'Aronautique et de l'Espace respectively in 1975 and in 1977, the "Doctorat d'Etat" degree in 1982 and the "Habilitation Diriger des Recherches" in 1986 both from the University of Toulouse III. He is the co-author (with Dr. Didier DUBOIS) of two monographs: "Fuzzy Sets and Systems: Theory and Applications" (Academic Press, New York, 1980) and "Possibility Theory" (Masson, Paris, 1985 and 1987 for the French version, Plenum Press, New York, 1988 for the English one), of about three hundred technical papers and co-editor of the books "Fuzzy Logic in Knowledge Engineering" (Verlag TV Rheinland, Kln, 1986), "Non-Standard Logics for Automated Reasoning" (Academic Press, New York, 1988), "Readings in Fuzzy Sets for Intelligent Systems" (Morgan & Kaufmann, San Mateo, CA, 1993) and "Fuzzy Information Engineering: A Guided Tour of Applications" (Wiley, New York, 1997),as well as of several special issues of international journals. He has been also member of the research group Lea Somb which contributed two books on Reasoning under Incomplete Information and on Revision and Updating of Knowledge Bases published by Wiley (1990, 1994). He is co-editor of the fuzzy set bulletin, BUSEFAL, which has appeared quarterly since 1979. He has been Program Co-Chairman of the First IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems in 1992. He is Programme Chairman of the 13th Biennial European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI'98). He is also member of the editorial organizations of the International Journal "Fuzzy Sets and Systems", the "IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems", the Inter. J. "Information Sciences" (subseries "Intelligent Systems"), the "Inter. J. of Intelligent Systems", the "Inter. J. of Approximate Reasoning", the "J. of Applied Non-Classical Logics", the "Inter. J. of Expert Systems: Research and Applications", the Inter. J. "Computers and Artificial Intelligence, the "J. of Intelligent Information Systems", "the J. Soft Computing", the "Artificial Intelligence Journal" (since 1997), "Fundamenta Informaticae" (since 1997) and the French "Revue d'Intelligence Artificielle". His current research interests are in fuzzy set and possibility theory, approximate reasoning and non-classical logics, artificial intelligence and inference systems, incomplete and uncertain information database management systems, decision analysis, and operations research.
