PMDE-logo First Workshop on Process-based approaches for Model-Driven Engineering (PMDE) - June 7, 2011

In conjunction with ECMFA 2011 conference, June 6-9, 2011, Birmingham, UK

Program

PMDE 2011 is now part of the “ECMFA 2011 Symposion on Model Driven Engineering: Software & Data Integration, Process Based Approaches and Tools” along with the MBSDI and the MDTPI workshops.

It is our pleasure to announce two additional highlights as part of this Symposion:

  • Monday, June 6, 14:00 - Prof. Robert France, Colorado State Univ., will give an additional keynote on the topic of "Why Modeling is Essential to Software Engineering?"
  • Monday, June 6, 16:30 - There will be a panel discussion with some very prominent panelists on the topics of "Old and New Streams in Model Based Engineering".
    • What are the emerging research areas in model based approaches?
    • Who are the main drivers in model research: scientific curiosity, industrial need, or technology progress?”
The PMDE 2011 papers will be presented at the 3rd session of this Symposion, on Tuseday June 7th, 2011, 9:30-12:00.

14:00 - 15:30 Why modeling is essential to Software Engineering ?
Robert France, Colorado State University
Abstract: The term Model Driven Engineering (MDE) is typically used to describe software development approaches in which models of software systems are created, analyzed and used to create dependable implementations. In this talk I will discuss some of the major challenges that must be tackled in order to realize the MDE vision of software development. I argue that MDE research addresses core software engineering concerns. The challenges can be viewed as wicked problems, but they present the software engineering community with research opportunities that, if properly exploited, can lead to a significant reduction in the gap between evolving software complexity and software development technologies.
