Problematics
The necessity for handling high resolution multimedia contents, created from multi-source distributed systems, has raised new problems in the field of indexation and information access:
- distributed storage,
- distributed processing of information,
- descriptors generation,
- meta-data formats,
- real time information retrieval, geolocalisation of documents in mobile or pervasive contexts, etc.
In this context, the transfer of the pertinent contents, from their storage place, has become a real bottleneck, especially with regard to the performance of information access.
The LINDO European project aims to develop a generic architecture, in which not only the storage of multimedia documents is distributed, but also the indexation is distributed on different storage units, that are possibly heterogeneous, geographically distant, of various capacities ...
Rather than moving the content to the processing units, a possibility would be to send and execute the relevant indexing routines on remote sites. Only the strict relevant information that matches a query must be transferred to a user, dealing with the problem of media’s granularity and format of the answer.
The aim of the project is not to define yet another model or indexing engine but rather to encapsulate in the generic architecture the existing engines. In this context, standards for used interfaces and different metadata formats handled will be proposed.
The validation of the results will be done in real conditions with demonstrations in the Video-surveillance and Multimedia archives domains.
Specification and application of a generic indexing algorithm description model
During the Master’s degree of Dana Codreanu, we have proposed a generic indexing algorithm description model. The following figure illustrates an overview of its structure.

You can download some instances of this model at the following url: http://www.irit.fr/ Sebastien.Laborie/LINDO/listingAlgos.php. The Master’s Thesis is also available hereafter (in french).

Towards a generic metadata framework
We have proposed a generic metadata framework that defines an abstract
representation of a multimedia document and encapsulates the most common metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, Exif, MPEG-7, MXF...). The following figure illustrates an overview of its structure.

You can download the XML Schema of our generic metadata format and some examples of its instantiation.
